Foreword

The relationship between countries is linked to a correlation of political, social, and cultural needs.

In particular, a civilization is a complex historical cradle where various cultures have combined and evolved.

It is uncommon for a civilization to emerge and advance on its own.

Civilizations evolve by going through continuous external relations events and collisions with neighboring countries.

In the pre-modern era, the inflow of Chinese culture to the Korean peninsula had the realistic purpose of advanced products of civilization being absorbed so that Korea could have an opportunity for independent cultural development.

Then newly reinvented independent history and culture from the Korean Peninsula were conveyed back to China again, developing complementarily.

Through ocean routes, Korea and China have been connected constantly, exchanging spiritual heritage through human contacts and material civilization through cultural exchanges.

For a long time in East Asian society, Korea and China have exchanged via diverse land routes covering a huge area, and sea routes across an endless azure ocean.

However, the existing exchange of civilization between Korea and China has drawn the most attention based on land-centered exchanges.

Therefore, we would like to make a fresh attempt at approaching favorable future possibilities between the two nations from a maritime historical perspective.

We hope to do this by collecting traces of maritime civilization exchanges that existed during the course of the land-centered exchange history between Korea and China.

We would like to present an opportunity for the range of Korea-China civilization exchange studies to be expanded from the land to the ocean by introducing the fact that maritime exchanges between Korea and China continued to exist even during the dark ages of maritime history.

By welcoming the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and China and the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Maritime Museum of Korea (MMK), the MMK would like to take a look at the history of Korea-China maritime civilization exchange, which makes up a large portion of East Asian maritime history. We hope this exhibition will provide a meaningful opportunity to comprehend the influence of maritime civilization exchange, which has affected the development of these two nations.
