The diving women(haenyeo) of Jeju used goggles called nun(“eyes”) when they worked under the sea.

They worked solely by the naked eye in the early days, but began to wear goggles during the late nineteenth century.

The use of goggles gave the divers clearer vision under the sea, resulting in a significant increase of their harvest.

There were two types of diving goggles: a single-eyed goggle, called a wangnun(lit. “large eye”) and double-eyed goggles, called ssangnun,(lit. “double eyes”), which were attached to the head with a cord and elastic band.

The double-eyed goggles were used at first, but they were replaced by the single-eyed goggle in the 1960s.
